HEAPHY TRACK 7 days Nelson - Nelson One of the foremost tracks of the South Island & one of the most vary, encompassing alpine pastures, dense rainforests & wild coastal terrain. We offer a 7 day package from Nelson which includes a 5 day guided walk over this fascinating track. From Nelson Airport you drive through the extreme pleasant Tasman district to the town of Motueka before driving over the Takaka hill to the small town of the same name where you spend the night. Next day you will be transported, with your track guides, to the beginning of the Heaphy Track in the Aorere Valley. Here we begin walking - 5 hrs on the first day. The next day takes you through beech forest & the tussock covered Gouland Downs before descending to Cave Brook. Todays walk is around 4 hours, with time to relax before the longest days hike. This takes you across the Saxon River flats & up onto a ridge marking the beginning of the West Coast. There is a long gentle descent towards the coast before reaching our overnight hut, at the juction of the Heaphy & Lewis Rivers. Day 5 is another easy day which takes you over the Heaphy River flats. Vegetation has changed dramatically & you are now in sub-tropical rainforest with kowhai, nikau palms & cabbage trees. Time for a swim in a laggoon & a walk along the beach takes you to Field’s Cave before reaching our overnight stop. Next day is our final day on the track - a 5 hour walk along the dramatic West Coast - high cliffs, pounding seas & wild scenery. On arrival at conical Kohaihai Hill you are met by 4WD & transported to the small town of Karamea where you spend this last night. Following day you will be transported back to Nelson Airport. Although not a difficult hike it is for the physically fit & preferably experienced hikers who will be expected to carry their own packs. Overnight stops will be pre-booked in Department of Conservation huts & all meals supplied. All hikes are led by experienced & knowledgeable guides. Costs per person are from NZ$1200 & full details & dates of operation on application. WANGAPEKA TRACK 6 days Nelson - Nelson The Wangapeka is the second track of the Kahurangi National Park. This track is not as frequently walked as the Heaphy. The track is 52 kms long, crosses two saddles of over 1000m and passes through beech forests & alpine pastures before descending into the dense sub-tropical rainforest of the West Coast. Some streams on this walk are not bridged & have to be forded, & huts are more basic giving much more a sense of the Wilderness. This track can also be included as a ‘Round trip’ with the Heaphy Track. Full details, costs & dates on application. |
