7 days Central North Island - Tongariro National Park - Rail & Jetboat Dominated by the three volcanoes of Tongariro National Park, the Central Volcanic Plateau of the North Island is a place of singular beauty. Mt Ruapehu, at 2797m, is the highest mountain in the North Island. Having its beginnings on the slopes of Ruapehu is the Whanganui River, New Zealand third longest river and the longest navigable river. Our 7 day/ 6 night tour between Auckland and Wellington combines both thes natural features. You travel by train - the TranzScenic from Auckland to National Park, spend two nights at a hotel in the Park, giving you a day to walk, if you wish, the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing or there are a number of shorter not so physically demanding walks within easy reach of the hotel. You then transfer, following the old coach road to Pipiriki on the Whanganui River where you meet the 'Bridge to Nowhere' jetboat for an exhilierating 90 minute journey up this historic river. Following a walk to the famous 'Bridge to Nowhere', you return by jetboat to the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge at Ramanui where you stay the night. Next morning you travel back down river by jetboat to Pipiriki then down the famous River Road, through the tiny settlements of Jerusalem, Ranana (London), Koriniti (Corinth) Pa and Atene (Athens) to the large river city of Wanganui where you spend the night. Next morning travel by Intercity service coach to Wellington, New Zealand's Capital city.
