Coffee beans were first grown in the beautiful Resolution Bay on Tanna Island in 1860. The Coffee plants were brought to Tanna (a Melanesian island 1 of 83 main islands of Vanuatu) by the French. The coffee grew well, the beans were of bold flavour, nutty and slightly chocolaty after taste and the coffee beans are still to this day a very smooth taste. The varieties of Coffee Beans grown in Tanna have changed very little but have been inproved in a very eco friendly way. Information about the history of the Coffee plantations in Tanna and Vanuatu is supplied with every purchase .
  
The Pictures above are from our many recent photograph collections taken of the people ( who are our friends and coffee plantation workers) All the families are involved from planting right through to the end product , this ensures all the families get the maximum income for all their work. A coffee being served in a lovey Cafe at The Moorngs in Efate a waterfront proerty and a lovely place to stay,then we have a picture of the entrance of our coffee facility which you can visit in the grounds of the old Mission in Mele.Next picture a great place to relax by the pool overlooking the sea, great sunsets from the moorings. The colourful womens market which is a must to visit to buy beautiful colourful dresses and handicrafts, the market is open every day from very early in the morning till late , old singer sewing machines are on every counter and are a very precious possession to all the ladies of the market.
Delicious cups of TANNA COFFEE are served in all the resorts and cafes in Vanuatu. The Main tourists islands are Efate is the third largest island in area,but probably the busiest as the main airport is in Efate Island ( pronouced ef-arty) and the largest ports for produce in and out of the 83 islands that make up the islands of Vanuatu Melanesia Santo being the largest island, Malekula the second largest The rest of the 83 islands are a long line of remote tropical islands several of which like TANNA island are ideal for growing Coffee. Contrary to popular belief the Best Pure Arabica Coffee can and is grown at a low altitude, the coffee grown on the islands of Vanuatu have the benefit of volcanic soil and soil rich in all the elements desired by top quality coffee growers also the latitude and longitude of the island particulary Tanna more than compensates for altitude so do not be mislead by others, as we are producing possiblyone of the very BEST PURE ARABICA - ORGANIC- SINGLE ORIGIN COFFEE

All Tanna Coffee cherries when ripe are picked by hand from the coffee bushes which grow under big canopies of shade trees. Harvesting the cherries is a very satisfying job which all the family get involved in and us as well if we are in the plantations at the right times, which we try hard to be.
Harvesting Grapes/ Harvesting Olives /or what ever one is harvesting is extremly satisfying, and coffee cherries are no exception, it is even more rewarding to see the locals who own their land realizing the potential of their land. It takes time education and skill to be patient with a crop like Coffee.
It is also important to remember although we are usually drenched in sunshine blue blue skies and very light winds and extremly hot conditions at times, the weather is a master at all times, one is never sure when the next cyclone ,tornado or hurraine is going to race through the plantations creating havoc to all the coffee plantations the houses ( mostly all built of Pandanas & Banana leaves also other large tropical plants as stays) sometimes a peace of old wood from a ship that has come ashore wrecked old cardboard and maybe if you are really lucky some corregated iron.
The dwellings are easly built and easily destroyed by the weather, however it is normal to refresh and re build the dwellings regulary so it is a normal practise , however losing all of ones crops is not so easily recoverd as the house, lucky the last few years have been resonably good weather.
The houses are pretty and all have their own large areas of bush and green plants around, and some really go into gardening flowers and shells amoungst the vegge patch ( which is becoming poular with the help of a Kiwi gardening group) is quite popular. There is abundant fish in the sea and fresh meat available along with fruit to pick freshly from the trees and bushes , a diet to be envied by the western world .
